A Flipped Lesson for Teaching Fluency

  • Nov. 17, 2014, 3:19 p.m.

In a flipped lesson, the explicit instruction, or focus lesson, is recorded by the teacher and viewed online by the students for homework. In elementary classrooms, the focus lesson may not be homework, but rather, viewed on iPads or computers in class while the teacher works with other students. The purpose of a flipped lesson is to deliver the critical content for a learning target via video so that students can watch and replay if necessary.  After the viewing the lesson, the teacher meets with the students to provide guided instruction with close monitoring.  Lessons can be posted on your class website, on Edmodo, or on YouTube.  Also consider using apps like Educreations or Explain Everything.  I created an example of flipped lesson on reading with expression and fluency. The lesson is stored on the Educreations server and accessed through a web link.  Click here to view my example lesson.

Happy teaching!
